Frequent Answers and Questions

Your Questions…Answered!
Is teeth whitening safe?
Teeth whitening is a simple and safe way to brighten your smile. Dr. Sophorn/Chakrya offers two ways to whiten. In-office whitening takes about an hour in our dental office. Our at-home beaching lets you conveniently lighten teeth in daily sessions at home or during your commute. Depending upon your situation and the causes of your dental discoloration, we'll determine which system would benefit you the most.

Since the 18th century, people have used teeth whitening products to lighten their smiles. Modern choices are strong, efficient, effective, and safe. Some patients may experience slight dental sensitivity after a whitening session, but it subsides quickly. Take an ibuprofen before your session if sensitivity is a concern.

What can be done to improve some old silver fillings which are beginning to look bad?

Silver amalgam fillings, which are composed of 50% mercury and 50% silver alloy ,eventually need to be replaced. It may surprise you to know that the average life span of a silver filling is five to eight years. Your dentist can tell you when they appear to NEED to be replaced due to leakage, breakdown or recurrent decay.

If your concern is strictly COSMETIC, there are many new methods available to replace the fillings with beautiful, functional long lasting restorations.

Such things as white filling materials, porcelain inlays , crowns and veneers may be used to give you the smile you are seeking.

There is currently a great deal of interest in new reinforced hybrid materials. These beautiful resin materials may be reinforced with fibers, similar to fiberglass, and used in very conservative inlays and bridges without having to grind away a whole healthy tooth.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept only cash. Call if you have questions or to schedule an appointment.

How can I prevent cavities?

Even patients who brush regularly and avoid sugary beverages can still be prone to cavities. We recommend avoiding snacking throughout the day – you should always brush after meals and snacking between meals means that food debris stays on your teeth longer. In addition, you should floss regularly and rinse with a fluoride solution.

Most cavities occur between teeth, where only dental floss can reach. Fluoride will strengthen tooth enamel and remineralize areas softened by decay. Visit us regularly – at least every six months – and we’ll provide specific tips and services to help you battle his common affliction.

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is extremely common and can be caused by several factors. Your teeth might have tiny fractures or areas of decay. Gum disease or gum recession is another common cause of tooth sensitivity. Are your gums red and swollen? Can you see your tooth roots? When tooth roots are exposed, this can cause severe tooth sensitivity. Bruxism, grinding your teeth at night, might also be a factor. Visit Sophorn Dental Clinic for an exam, so we can determine the exact cause in your unique situation.

Why are dental checkups recommended every six months?

Sophorn Family Dental believes in the importance of preventive dental care, and that’s why we (and the Cambodian Dental Association) recommend you come in every six months for a routine cleaning and exam. Patients at increased risk of dental disease – smokers, individuals with diabetes, those already suffering from gum disease, and pregnant women – are advised to visit our Sophorn dental office even more frequently. Why so often? The earlier Dr. Sophorn and Dr. Charkya. discovers your oral health issues (gum disease, teeth grinding, cavities, or oral cancer to name a few), the better your chances of recovery. If it’s been a long time since your last trip to the dentist, contact Sophorn Family Dental for an appointment.

What happens if missing teeth aren’t replaced?

Missing teeth can cause a number of other problems, including the loss of other teeth. Missing teeth also cause problems with your bite and oral function, as other teeth move to fill in the space left by the lost tooth or teeth. Over time, these shifts can cause TMJ pain, increased risk of cavities, and problems with chewing. Sophorn Family Dental offers several tooth replacement options including dentures and partials and dental implants
